Meticulously revising the design concept to identify areas of opportunity and improve misaligned design choices.
Cardiola is an app that I had previously designed, I decided to revisit the app and apply my improved design acumen to identify areas of opportunity to enhance the design concept, or even go as far as reimagining the approach all together for some features.
The idea for the application is simple, to make new friends through sports. Over the years I found myself participating in group chats across different platforms dedicated to scheduling sporting hangouts and events. The challenge was that the chat platforms had poor usability because they were not designed broadly to chat, and not to organise events.
As the sole UX designer for this project, I worked independently and unsupervised throughout the entire redesign process. My responsibilities included:

The Cardiola app redesign aimed to deliver a more engaging, intuitive, and efficient platform for users. By focusing on the following key value propositions, the project sought to foster a stronger sense of community within the app:
To understand the market landscape and identify opportunities for the Cardiola app, a competitive analysis was conducted. Two key competitors in the sports event organization and social networking space were identified: Meetup and Playo.
Meetup is a popular platform that facilitates the organization of group events and activities, including sports events. While it covers a wide range of interests, sports is one of its many categories, which means it may not cater specifically to sports enthusiasts' needs.
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
Playo is a sports-focused app that connects users with sports venues, events, and other players. It offers features such as venue booking, event creation, and a player rating system.
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
By analyzing these competitors, the Cardiola app can position itself as a sports-focused platform that combines the best features of both Meetup and Playo while addressing their weaknesses. Cardiola can emphasize its unique value propositions, such as instant invoicing, quicker onboarding, and a more engaging user interface.
The global sports market is estimated to be worth over $620 billion, with the sports app industry experiencing significant growth. In addition, the social networking market is estimated to be worth over $300 billion by 2025. As a platform that combines sports and social networking, Cardiola has the potential to tap into both markets and capture a share of this growing demand.
The COVID-19 pandemic has also led to an increased emphasis on health and wellness, with many people seeking ways to stay active and maintain their mental well-being. As a result, there is a growing interest in platforms like Cardiola that facilitate social interactions and promote physical activity.
By focusing on the key value propositions and learning from the competitive analysis, Cardiola can carve out a niche in the sports event organization and social networking space

Areas of Opportunity
During the redesign process, several challenges and opportunities for improvement were identified. Addressing these issues would result in a more effective and user-friendly app experience:
Recognizing that users often prefer a quick and easy way to make payments for sports events, a custom invoicing feature was added to the chat screen. The host can now create an invoice with a specified amount and share it as a link within the group chat, allowing users to make instant payments without having to switch apps or add new payees. This feature simplifies the payment process and ensures a seamless experience for both the host and the participants.
Users can sign in using their Apple ID, Google Play account, or phone number, which eliminates the need for email verification. This streamlined onboarding process allows users to start using the app quickly
Users can now indicate their availability, making it easier for event organisers to identify and invite participants who are free during specific time slots. This feature enhances the overall user experience by simplifying the event planning process.
For users who have not yet added any contacts or events, informative zero state screens have been introduced. These screens provide helpful prompts, such as "You have no contacts, find events HERE to make new friends" and "You have no events completed, join events here!" accompanied by a call-to-action (CTA) button. These zero states encourage users to explore the app and join events, promoting user engagement and fostering a sense of community within the platform.
The Cardiola app redesign also focused on enhancing the visual aspects of the app, ensuring a more modern, clean, and user-friendly interface. The following visual improvements were made to various screens within the app:
Old Design:
The toggle to switch to list view was not obvious, making it less user-friendly.
The gradient design appeared dated, and a more contemporary look was desired.
List view did not show how many players were already participating in an event.
Users could not filter events.
New Design:
The toggle to switch to list view is now more prominent and intuitive.
The gradient design has been removed in favor of a clean and modern aesthetic.
Sport icons are now accompanied by their designated names to accommodate users who may be unfamiliar with certain icons or want to try new sports.
Users can now filter events based on their preferences.
Old Design:
The layout resembled more of a Dribbble shot rather than a functional UI.
There was a lack of consistency in design elements, such as the hexagon image and round-corner buttons and images.
New Design:
The user interface has been improved for a more modern and clean appearance.
Design elements have been made consistent throughout the screen.
New Design:
UI changes have been made, such as using a photo to cover the top half of the screen and incorporating emojis for a friendlier feel.
A review player system has been added, allowing users to get a sense of who they will be meeting up with at events.
New Design:
Admins can now send invoices within the chat for users to make quick payments without leaving the app.
UI improvements have been made, such as removing drop shadows.
A zero state has been added for users without friends, providing a call-to-action (CTA) to find events and make connections.
New Design:
Swiping through the onboarding screens changes the background color, adding a fun and engaging element to the app experience.
Login options are always visible and easily accessible.
Old Design:
More of a Dribbble shot
Lack of consistency (Hexagon image.. round corner buttons and images)
